MASKING SYMPTOMS RATHER THAN TREATING CAUSES

Severe persistent pain is the most common symptom of fibromyalgia. Patients often describe it as experiencing the worst, unrelenting flu they ever had and then getting hit by a truck. Many patients take relatively high doses of pain medications in order to physically manage simple day-to-day tasks. But keep in mind the painkillers are simply masking the symptoms, not addressing the physiological and underlying problems that are causing the pain. Similarly, anti-depressants are usually addressing the depression symptom that accompanies long-term and consistent pain.

UNPLEASANT SIDE EFFECTS

There are a wide variety of medications used to treat the widespread pain, fatigue, and depression caused by fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, a lot of this medication causes numerous side effects.  Some can be addictive. Many anti-inflammatories and pain relief medications cause side effects, including gastrointestinal bleeding. Sleep medications can be habit-forming. Some antidepressants can only be taken for short periods of time because of unpleasant side effects.  Plus, these medications require attention and readjustments to make sure they are effective.
